Frankly it was a horrible hire from the beginning boo on GT leadership
There is obviously a disconnect with the president and the athletics dept in regards to goals for athletics and academics and how to interconnect them seamlessly into the operations of the university. (it sorta reminds me of old Tulane when they were in the SEC and went another direction).
There ex-AD was A guy with background in smaller private schools, did not have the experience to translate to a large national public institution in the middle of the football crazy SEC.
You are SO RIGHT, they need an AD with passion, drive and experience in marketing and business development and leveraging it was the growth of the University. The person has to be able to grow the brand, get the folks to the stands and grow the contribution base. and be successful in a huge city and compete with the state school up the road in Athens and the other SEC schools.
It has to be a person like the Syracuse hire coming from ESPN... If not I see GT devolving into a niche highly respected public technical university, sorta like Resseslear Polytechnic Institute MIT and let the athletics just move on
